LED Signs in Edmonton for Businesses and Commercial Properties

LED illumination is the standard for commercial signs in Edmonton. It replaced fluorescent technology across virtually all sign types because it outperforms on every practical measure: energy consumption, lifespan, cold-weather performance, colour consistency, and maintenance frequency. All illuminated signs we produce use LED technology.

Why LED Over Fluorescent in Edmonton

Consistent Output in Winter. 11 Years Before First Replacement.

The performance gap between LED and fluorescent is especially relevant in Edmonton’s climate. Fluorescent tubes lose significant output at low temperatures, which means a fluorescent sign in an Edmonton winter is noticeably dimmer than the same sign in summer. LED modules maintain consistent output down to well below freezing: your sign performs the same in January as in July.

LED modules are rated for 50,000 or more hours of operation, compared to 10,000 to 15,000 hours for typical fluorescent tubes. At 12 hours of operation per day, that is roughly 11 years of LED operation before the first module replacement is expected, versus 2 to 3 years for fluorescent. LED signs also consume 50 to 80 percent less energy than fluorescent alternatives producing equivalent light output.

LED Sign Types We Produce

Five LED Sign Formats. Cold-Weather Rated Throughout.

Every illuminated sign we produce uses LED technology. The right format depends on your application, building, and budget.

01

LED Channel Letters

Individually fabricated three-dimensional letters with LED modules inside each housing. Front-lit glow through a coloured acrylic face. Halo-lit push light out the back to create a glow around each letter. Both use LED modules rated for cold-weather operation for Edmonton winters.

02

Illuminated Cabinet Signs

Aluminum cabinet enclosures with acrylic or polycarbonate faces, illuminated from within by LED strip or module arrays. Even illumination across the face, significantly less power than fluorescent cabinets. We fabricate in-house and produce LED retrofit kits for existing fluorescent cabinets.

03

LED Neon-Style Signs

Flexible LED strip formed to letter or graphic shapes, producing an effect similar to traditional neon at lower cost, lower power, and without glass fragility. Popular for interior branding, hospitality, and retail displays. Available in any colour, dimmable.

04

Electronic Message Display (EMD) Signs

Full-colour LED display panels integrated into freestanding or building-mounted sign structures. Change messages, display prices, and promote specials from a remote management system. Subject to City of Edmonton bylaw regulations on brightness, pixel pitch, and message hold time.

05

Backlit LED Panels and Light Boxes

LED-illuminated flat panel displays for menu boards, reception areas, retail display, and interior branding. Even, consistent illumination across large-format graphics without the hot spots or dimming of older fluorescent lightbox technology.

Existing Fluorescent Sign?

LED Retrofit Is the Cost-Effective Solution

We assess existing signs and produce LED retrofit kits matched to the sign’s internal dimensions. Retrofit extends sign life and eliminates ongoing fluorescent lamp replacement costs.

Performance and Longevity

11 Years at 12 Hours Per Day. 50-80% Less Energy.

LED outperforms fluorescent on every practical measure relevant to Edmonton commercial sign operation.

LED modules used in commercial signs are rated for 50,000 hours or more of operation. At 12 hours per day, this equates to approximately 11 years before the first module replacements are expected. Power supplies typically have a shorter service life than the LEDs themselves and are the more common maintenance item after several years of operation.

LED signs typically consume 50 to 80 percent less energy than fluorescent alternatives producing equivalent light output. For businesses with large illuminated cabinet signs or multiple channel letter sets running 12 or more hours per day, the energy saving is a meaningful reduction in operating cost over the sign’s service life.

Any illuminated sign installation or retrofit involving electrical work requires an electrical permit under Alberta’s Safety Codes Act. Pivotal Signs manages the electrical permit and performs the electrical connection in-house as part of every LED sign project.

50,000 Hour LED Lifespan

Approximately 11 years at 12 hours per day. Power supplies are the more common maintenance item after several years. LED modules themselves rarely fail before the power supply.

50-80% Less Energy

Compared to fluorescent alternatives producing equivalent output. Meaningful operating cost reduction for signs running 12 or more hours per day year-round.

Consistent in Edmonton Winters

LED maintains full brightness output at temperatures well below freezing. Fluorescent loses significant output in cold. Your sign looks the same in January as in July.

LED Retrofit Service

We assess existing fluorescent signs and produce LED retrofit kits matched to the sign’s internal dimensions. More cost-effective than full replacement, extends sign life.

Fabrication and Installation

Fabricated In-House. Electrical Permit Managed.

We fabricate all LED sign types in-house at our Edmonton production facility. Channel letter LED modules are installed during fabrication. Cabinet sign LED arrays are sized and installed for the specific cabinet dimensions. Neon-style LED is formed and mounted to the substrate. All illuminated signs are wired to a transformer or power supply as part of fabrication.

Installation includes mounting, electrical connection, and commissioning. We manage the electrical permit required under Alberta’s Safety Codes Act and perform the licensed electrical work in-house. For LED retrofit projects on existing signs, we assess the sign, produce the retrofit kit, and install it without replacing the cabinet or channel letter structure.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about LED signs from Edmonton businesses.

LED modules used in commercial signs are rated for 50,000 hours or more of operation. At 12 hours per day, this equates to approximately 11 years before the first module replacements are expected. Power supplies typically have a shorter service life than the LEDs themselves and are the more common maintenance item after several years of operation.
Yes. LED technology performs reliably in cold temperatures, including Edmonton’s sustained winter conditions. Unlike fluorescent tubes, which lose significant output at low temperatures, LED modules maintain consistent brightness year-round. We specify LED components rated for cold-weather operation in all outdoor sign applications.
Yes. We assess existing fluorescent signs and produce LED retrofit kits matched to the sign’s internal dimensions. Retrofit is typically more cost-effective than full sign replacement and extends the useful life of the existing cabinet or channel letter structure. Contact us at 587-802-3185 to discuss a retrofit assessment for your sign.
Yes. Any illuminated sign installation or retrofit involving electrical work requires an electrical permit under Alberta’s Safety Codes Act. The work must be performed by a licensed electrical contractor. Pivotal Signs manages the electrical permit and performs the electrical connection in-house.
For channel letters, the colour is determined by the acrylic face colour for front-lit configurations and the halo colour for reverse-lit. For LED neon-style signs, a wide range of standard colours is available, and RGB LED allows colour-changing effects. For electronic message displays, full-colour LED arrays can display any colour. We advise on colour specifications for each sign type during the design consultation.
