Channel Letters in Edmonton for Retail and Commercial Storefronts

Channel letters are the gold standard for commercial storefront signage. Individually fabricated three-dimensional letters mounted directly to a building facade, they produce a clean, dimensional brand statement that reads clearly from the street in both daylight and after dark.

How Channel Letters Are Made

Fabricated Letter by Letter in Our Edmonton Shop

Each channel letter is fabricated individually from aluminum and acrylic components. The return (sides of the letter) is formed from aluminum sheeting using CNC bending equipment. The face is cut from acrylic sheet in the letter profile. The back is also aluminum, welded to the return to form a sealed three-dimensional letter housing. LED modules are installed inside each letter for illuminated configurations.

Because each letter is fabricated individually, channel letter sets can be produced in any font, at any size, and in any colour. The fabrication process is the same whether the letter set spells out a two-letter monogram or a twenty-character business name. Almost any font can be reproduced in channel letter form.

Illumination and Mounting Options

Four Illumination Configurations. Two Mounting Methods.

Channel letters are highly configurable. The right combination depends on your brand, building, and the visual effect you are trying to achieve.

01

Front-Lit Channel Letters

The most common configuration. LED modules inside the letter housing illuminate the acrylic face from within, producing a consistent glow in the face colour. Highly legible at night and suited to most retail and commercial applications. Available in a wide range of acrylic colours.

02

Halo-Lit (Reverse) Channel Letters

The face is solid aluminum or painted metal. LED modules push light out through a clear polycarbonate back, creating a halo of light around each letter against the building surface. Produces a more premium, sophisticated appearance suited to corporate, hospitality, and upscale retail.

03

Combination (Front and Halo)

Both the face and the back allow light to escape, combining a front-lit glow with a halo effect. The face colour and halo colour can be set independently. Produces maximum visual impact and is highly customizable for brands where differentiation matters.

04

Non-Illuminated Dimensional Letters

Channel letter construction without LED components. Used in interior applications, exterior locations where ambient lighting is sufficient, or where budget does not include illumination. Same three-dimensional fabrication and visual quality as illuminated sets.

05

Flush Mount vs. Raceway Mount

Flush mount: letters attach directly to the building surface for the cleanest aesthetic, wiring runs through the wall. Raceway mount: letters attach to a painted metal channel containing all wiring, minimizing structural penetrations. We advise on the right approach for your building.

Permits, Materials, and Timeline

Permits Managed In-House. Materials Rated for Edmonton Winters.

We manage the development permit, electrical permit, fabrication, and installation as a single project. No coordination between multiple vendors.

Channel letter signs in Edmonton require a development permit and, because they are illuminated, a separate electrical permit under Alberta’s Safety Codes Act. The electrical work must be performed by a licensed electrical contractor. Pivotal Signs manages both permit applications and performs the electrical installation in-house. We do not begin fabrication until the permits are approved.

Channel letters in Edmonton are exposed to significant UV intensity in summer, freeze-thaw cycling in spring and fall, and sustained cold in winter. We specify UV-stable acrylics for faces, powder-coated aluminum returns, and LED modules rated for cold-weather operation. Modern LED illumination systems perform reliably through Edmonton’s winter conditions.

Channel letter projects typically run 6 to 10 weeks from first consultation to installed sign. This includes design and approval, permit application and review, fabrication, and installation. Permit processing time is the least predictable element; we manage this actively to keep the project moving.

Development Permit

Required for channel letter signs in Edmonton under the City of Edmonton Zoning Bylaw. We prepare and submit the application and follow up through the review process.

Electrical Permit

Required for all illuminated channel letters under Alberta’s Safety Codes Act. We manage the electrical permit and perform the licensed electrical installation in-house.

UV-Stable Components

UV-stable acrylics for sign faces, powder-coated aluminum returns, and cold-weather rated LED modules specified for Edmonton outdoor conditions.

LED Longevity

LED modules rated for 50,000 or more hours of operation. First maintenance is typically an individual module replacement, not a full sign replacement.

Installation and Longevity

Installed by Our Crew. Built to Last a Decade.

Channel letters can be mounted to most commercial building surfaces including brick, concrete, metal panel, stucco, and wood framing. The mounting method and anchor hardware vary by wall construction type. We assess the building surface during the consultation and specify the appropriate installation approach before fabrication begins.

Channel letters fabricated with quality aluminum, UV-stable acrylics, and LED modules typically last 10 or more years in outdoor conditions. With regular cleaning and prompt attention to any module failures, channel letters serve a business through multiple seasons and brand cycles.

Channel letter pricing depends on the number of letters, letter height, illumination type, mounting method, and permit requirements. They are a premium sign type compared to cabinet signs or flat panel graphics. Contact Pivotal Signs at 780-540-9540 for a project-specific quote after we review your font, building, and configuration requirements.

Almost any font can be reproduced in channel letter form. Fonts with very thin strokes or very fine serifs are more challenging and expensive to fabricate at smaller sizes but are achievable at larger dimensions. Script fonts require careful design to ensure structural integrity of letter connections. Our design team advises on font choices that work well for the specific letter size and style.

Yes. Modern LED illumination systems perform reliably in cold temperatures, including Edmonton’s sustained winter conditions. Aluminum and quality acrylics handle freeze-thaw cycling well. We specify components that are rated for cold-weather operation to ensure year-round performance.
